Burton Green Church of England Primary School

On a sunny day in late September, the children in year 6, along with Mrs Clayden and some adult helpers, cycled from school along the Greenway to Kenilworth to be part of the opening ceremony for the new cycle and foot bridge across Coventry Road in Kenilworth . The new bridge connects the Kenilworth to Berkswell Greenway (which runs through Burton Green along the route of an old railway line) with Kenilworth Common and through to Abbey Fields. It is part of the Connect2 cycle routes which received lottery money a few years ago to encourage more people to use their bikes. A year ago the completion of the scheme was in doubt, but 1,700 people signed a petition and pupils from the school wrote letters in support of the project, so it was great to see it finally open.

The children took part in the opening ceremony, waving flags and two pupils helped cut the ribbon in front of a large crowd. We then cycled across the new bridge and all the way to Abbey Fields for a picnic under a tree. The entire route is off road except for a very short section in Kenilworth , and fortunately most of it is through wooded areas because it was a very hot and sunny day. We returned to school by bike, hot and tired, but proud to have been part of this historic occasion.
